‘Colors and sounds from South Serbia’

Dear friends,

You are cordially invited to attend the cultural event “Sounds and Colors of the Serbian South” by  St. Sava FOSCA (Friends of Serbian Culture Association) to be held on May 14-th 2023, 4:30 PM in New York City, 315 W, 22nd Street. You can purchase tickets easily via Eventbrite:

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sounds-and-colors-from-the-serbian-south-tickets-627654530597

Please also see the attached poster for the alternative ways to buy tickets (e.g. Venmo+email), or to give a donation. We greatly appreciate donations, which would allow us to continue presenting beautiful cultural content from the country of our ancestors.

The poster features a tambourine whose joyous jingle will accompany songs and dances as we travel musically from Vranje to Niš, and from the turn of the 19th century to the present.  After a short introduction to describe cultural and historical conditions after the defeat of the Ottomans in this part of Serbia, you will enjoy what can be described as the fireworks of colors, music and dance, emblematic of this part of Serbia and Europe. Pure joy!

The event will be narrated in English, each performance preceded by a brief introduction, including displayed descriptions and occasional translation of the lyrics.

Featuring:

Jovana Hadžić Lončarević  (voice), Milan Majstorovic (accordion), Boris Lončarević (guitar), Lea Ivanović (bass)

Dance ensemble:  Nikola Palivoda (choreographer), Isidora Filipović (also voice),  Aleksandra Kostić, Teodora Ivošević

Filip Filipovic (presenter, percussion), Predrag Filipović (voice, monologue, percussion), Dora Govorko (flute), Silvija Kokalj-Filipović and the FOSCA board (production).

KOLO CLINIC

Suzanne Patterson Center in Princeton, NJ

The event will start at 1:30 pm and end at 5-5:30 pm. The entrance is free!

Let us get together and learn to dance kolo!

Our Kolo workshop was a great success! A great contribution to the spirit of Thanksgiving and the festive atmosphere before the holidays! Dancing kolo is an experience of pure joy and communal togetherness. This is also a cool skill to have!

We had friends from around the world dancing kolo with us! We shared some laughs and conversations during the breaks while enjoying home-made cookies and pastries, juice, wine and champagne! Join us next time! Some of the pictures are below – the rest is on FOSCA’s Facebook profile.

All together!
Well done!

December 26 2021. Zooming – zumiranje sa Lazarom Dzamićem

And we are zooming again… We live in a turbulent, fast-paced world, marked by the unprecedented technological disruption of all aspects of human existence. How do we equip ourselves with the skills that can help us navigate this shifting landscape and make sense of the world around us? How to interpret, share and present the information, how to communicate and collaborate, how to succeed and, ultimately, how to live an accomplished life in this new world?

Our guest Lazar Dzamic is a writer and academic, an expert in communications and media who was the head of brand planning at Google Zoo, and who wears many more hats. If you search the Web for the online content authored by our guest, you will learn a lot!

In the Zoom event hosted by FOSCA, Lazar shared his thoughts on those new types of literacy that are essential for surviving and thriving in the modern world, and for making it a better place for everyone: Six literacies to save the World. In response to two ill-intentioned reviews of the film Dara of Jasenovac — both recently published, one by Variety, which is politically charged and manipulative, and another by Los Angeles Times, which is blunt revisionism of the Holocaust history — the FOSCA association wrote letters to the editors of the said newspapers.

We decided to acquaint the friends of Serbian culture with the content of the letters. You can find the links here: LA Times Variety We appreciate the support that we received from our followers.

FOSCA began preparations for its next cultural salon event. If you would like to be included in our mailing list, or you want to help prepare our future events, please send your email addresses to admin@fosca-stsava.org . Please follow us on our Facebook page too! You will find loads of interesting content there!

To all attendees of our “Starogradska Muzika” event: Thank you for your support, and we hope you enjoyed the program!

Complete program in PDF form can be downloaded here (PDF includes public links related to songs and poems – soon to be replaced with event recordings).

December 2019: As we are a new organization that acquired the 501(c)(3) non-profit status a couple of months ago, our Program Committee decided to organize a series of smaller events in place of the 2020 Ball. Apart from providing an opportunity to present various aspects of Serb culture, we hope that these events will help us collect the funds needed for an excellent organization of our first Svetosavski Bal in the year 2021.
